Monday munchies: Half-price food at 1F from 6 PM to 2 AM

As Beijing Boyce reports:

Add half-price food on Mondays as another reason to visit Tongli Studio bar 1F. A spin-off of 2F upstairs, 1F has been a success since taking over former restaurant Juliette’s.

1F offers a good selection of draft and bottled beers, steady service care of affable manager Jack, both a long bar and plenty of table seating as well as a deck, and a reputation for being a cut above some of  its immediate neighbors. I like the place because I almost always run into five or six people I know, including many from the media and the food and beverage sector.

While 1F is pouring plenty of draft and drinks, it wants to get more people trying the food. Thus, every Monday from 6 PM to 2 AM, all food is half-price. This includes the burgers which, aside from the one I had when the place first opened, have been pretty tasty. To be sure, they are excellent value at half-price.

And for even more value, grab your grub during happy hour from 5 PM to 9 PM, when pints of Guinness and Kilkenny are RMB35, a 330 ml Stella draft is RMB20, and a 250 ml Hoegaarden draft is RMB25.

Music in 1F

DJ Phil, long-time music mixer at Poacher’s on Friday nights and at Tun on Saturday nights, says come to 1F on Wednesdays as he spins American indie music and some eighties tunes from 10 PM.

Boyce Review

I decided to spend my money last night at 1F … it was as crowded as the first floor of Saddle but I managed to get drinks in a minute or so: For those on a budget, a pint of Tsingtao is RMB15. I also tried the Dark and Stormy cocktail, which packed a solid rum punch for RMB35. The staff here is competent and the place remained busy until the wee hours of the morning with a diverse clientele of young professionals, longer-term expatriates, and people from the food and beverage business, among others, a good sign for this newcomer.

Top Five Beijing Bars: Julian Fisher

The Tuesday night brain teaser of Beijing, Julian Fisher …  likes a drink of two. Here are his top five watering holes in Beijing.

Since I’m British and my formative years were spent in five-hundred year old pubs in Devon my list is full of fairly well-known drinkeries that make me feel at home:

[...]

I am going to cheat a little now because I have run out of numbers without reaching my two most visited watering holes (both within walking distance of my home as all good locals should be).

#5 – The Tree. Sitting in the philosophers corner (as my recently departed friend Steve always called it) opposite the bar on high stools under the framed image of an unknown man is a great place to peruse their extensive beer list before buying a 15RMB Tsingdao.

Newly born 1F is also looking good but now I’m just pushing it…

Sips and Bites

1F opened last night in the former Juliette’s space with free drinks from 9 PM to midnight. A good addition to the Tongli area given it is a cut above most bars on that street, with more space (it feels a bit like The Tree, which is no surprise, as some of the guys behind it used to work there), a nicer decor, and a diverse selection of beers — Kilkenny, Guinness, Stella, Hoegaarden, Yanjing on tap; Budvar, VB, Fuller’s, Bombardiers, and many more by bottle — not to mention a patio on which to drink them.

Nearby the 2F: Ground-level bar 1F to open tomorrow

It is amazing how fast 1F has come together in former French restaurant Juliette’s space in Tongli Studio, given the delays that tend to accompany openings in Beijing. This place has gone from empty shell two weeks ago to nearly finished venue that the staff says will have its “soft opening” tomorrow at ~8 PM.  This ground-level bar is sibling of and connected to cocktail joint 2F upstairs. Considering the kind of beer I saw being carried in today–Rogue, Duvel, Budvar, and the like–it looks like I might be spending some time here this summer.
